Evaluates 8 chest areas (4 anterior, 4 lateral) classifying profiles: A (A-lines, normal sliding → COPD/asthma), B (B-lines → pulmonary edema), A/B (mixed), C (consolidation), A' (absent sliding → pneumothorax).

Pneumothorax — sonographic signs?

Absent lung sliding, no B-lines, lung point (transition seen as intermittent movement).

When to use

Chest US is targeted for pleural effusion, diaphragmatic mobility, thoracentesis marking and bedside assessment (POCUS) in critically ill patients. High sensitivity for small effusions (≤ 50 mL) and pneumothorax — superior to plain radiography.

What to evaluate

Pleural space: presence/absence of fluid, estimated volume, septations, content (anechoic, echogenic, debris).
Diaphragm: respiratory mobility, thickness, paralysis signs.
Superficial lung parenchyma: consolidation, air bronchograms, B-lines (interstitial syndrome).
Barcode/'stratosphere sign' on M-mode → suspected pneumothorax.
